Chapter Thirty-Four
A knock at Thaliâs door interrupted her thoughts, and she wiped her eyes and cleared her throat as she invited them to enter.
She turned, shocked to see Alexius walk into her room, here, at the palace.
âThali, we need to talk.â
Thali's legs gave out as she sank onto the bed. The familiar voice earlierâthe voice that had told her not to open her mind to the threadsâthat had been Alexius.
âYouâreââ
âYes, Iâm a red dragon.â
âBut ⦠but youâre human.â
âI can take any shape I like.â
He hurried to the bed and continued packing where Thali had stopped. âWe have to get out of here.â
âBut ⦠but I donât understand,â Thali said. Her thoughts reeled.
âIâve been protecting you at the school. I was hoping youâd come into your abilities on your own, and I wanted to shield you from the others while that happened. But you left my protective range, and they saw you. I thought there was a chance youâd be safe here, but I was wrong. Thereâll be more coming if we donât leave now.â
âWill they â¦â
âNo, theyâll just fly above then leave if they canât find you here. So we need to leave, now.â
âWhere are we going?â
âSomewhere safe so you can learn about all your abilities.â He huffed. âThis is tiresome.â Alexius looked around the room.
Suddenly everything flew into the trunks, packing themselves, then the trunks shrunk to fit in his palm.
Alexius dropped them in his pocket before turning to Thali.
âI know youâre confused, and you have questions. But right now, we have to go. We donât have time for you to say your goodbyes, but they can come if you would like.â He glanced at Indi, Ana, and Bardo.
Thali nodded. Her world had flip-flopped three times within hours. She thought of all the people at the palace. If she had been the one to attract them here, then she had to leave so they could be safe. Elric had to be safe.
They crept out of the castle and marched into the forest, right into a substantial meadow mostly hidden from view of the castle. Alexius signaled for her to stop before he continued walking ahead, then with a pop, turned back into the red dragon sheâd just seen.
Alexius the dragon had a pouch around his neck. He pulled something out of it and placed it on the ground. In front of her eyes, it grew to become a stone basket the size of a wagon.
Get in.
Thali hesitated. Her aunt had just died so she wouldnât have to go somewhere with a big green dragon, and now here she was just hopping into the basket of a big red dragon.
Thali, you have to trust me. I will explain everything, but we have to go.
Just as he spoke, there was a shriek in the sky, and Thali, Indi, and Ana leaped into the stone bowl. She checked her wrist for Bardo. Alexius the dragon picked up the bowl and dropped them into the pouch around his neck. She felt him turn his head to look behind him before lunging into the air.
