Chapter Thirty-Four

A knock at Thali’s door interrupted her thoughts, and she wiped her eyes and cleared her throat as she invited them to enter.

She turned, shocked to see Alexius walk into her room, here, at the palace.

“Thali, we need to talk.”

Thali's legs gave out as she sank onto the bed. The familiar voice earlier—the voice that had told her not to open her mind to the threads—that had been Alexius.

“You’re—”

“Yes, I’m a red dragon.”

“But … but you’re human.”

“I can take any shape I like.”

He hurried to the bed and continued packing where Thali had stopped. “We have to get out of here.”

“But … but I don’t understand,” Thali said. Her thoughts reeled.

“I’ve been protecting you at the school. I was hoping you’d come into your abilities on your own, and I wanted to shield you from the others while that happened. But you left my protective range, and they saw you. I thought there was a chance you’d be safe here, but I was wrong. There’ll be more coming if we don’t leave now.”

“Will they …”

“No, they’ll just fly above then leave if they can’t find you here. So we need to leave, now.”

“Where are we going?”

“Somewhere safe so you can learn about all your abilities.” He huffed. “This is tiresome.” Alexius looked around the room.

Suddenly everything flew into the trunks, packing themselves, then the trunks shrunk to fit in his palm.

Alexius dropped them in his pocket before turning to Thali.

“I know you’re confused, and you have questions. But right now, we have to go. We don’t have time for you to say your goodbyes, but they can come if you would like.” He glanced at Indi, Ana, and Bardo.

Thali nodded. Her world had flip-flopped three times within hours. She thought of all the people at the palace. If she had been the one to attract them here, then she had to leave so they could be safe. Elric had to be safe.

They crept out of the castle and marched into the forest, right into a substantial meadow mostly hidden from view of the castle. Alexius signaled for her to stop before he continued walking ahead, then with a pop, turned back into the red dragon she’d just seen.

Alexius the dragon had a pouch around his neck. He pulled something out of it and placed it on the ground. In front of her eyes, it grew to become a stone basket the size of a wagon.

Get in.

Thali hesitated. Her aunt had just died so she wouldn’t have to go somewhere with a big green dragon, and now here she was just hopping into the basket of a big red dragon.

Thali, you have to trust me. I will explain everything, but we have to go.

Just as he spoke, there was a shriek in the sky, and Thali, Indi, and Ana leaped into the stone bowl. She checked her wrist for Bardo. Alexius the dragon picked up the bowl and dropped them into the pouch around his neck. She felt him turn his head to look behind him before lunging into the air.
